Hey, friend!
We make an infinite number of decisions in life, don’t we? Some are clear-cut. Others…not so much.
What do we do when we don’t know what to do? When there’s no apparent right answer and no obvious wrong one? When we just want what God wants, but we have no idea what that is?
First, we remind ourselves of the truth that God doesn’t want His will to be a mystery to us. And then we draw near to Him in faith, asking Him to guide us.
No, He won’t write the answer in the sky or tattoo it on our foreheads. But when the time is right, He’ll open doors…after He closes a few first. He’ll bring conversations, information, and opportunities our way. He’ll nudge impressions on our hearts that He confirms in other ways.
His methods are limitless, but one thing is sure: He will guide us.
Do you have a friend in need of God’s direction? Whether you’re aware of it or not, you probably do. Here are ten prayers for God’s direction, straight from God Himself in the pages of the Bible. Thank you for joining me in praying the Scriptures for God’s guidance in your friend’s life.
Prayers for God’s Direction
- Ask God to help your friend trust Him with all their heart, not relying on their own understanding. Pray that they would commit to acknowledging Him in all their ways, and that He would fulfill His promise to make their paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
- Claim God’s promise to instruct your friend, to teach them in the way they should go, and to counsel them with His eye upon them. (Psalm 32:8)
- Affirm to God that all your friend’s ways are pure in their own eyes, and that they have trouble seeing their own errors (as we all do!). Ask Him to “weigh your friend’s spirit” and examine their motives. (Proverbs 16:2)
- Pray that your friend would echo Jesus’ words: “I seek not My own will but the will of Him who sent me.” Pray that your friend would want to see God’s will accomplished in their life, and ask Him to reveal that to them in His timing. (John 5:30)
- Ask God to let your friend hear His lovingkindness in the morning, and that they would trust in Him. Pray that your friend would lift her soul to Him, and that their heart’s desire would be for Him to teach them the way in which they should walk. (Psalm 143:8)
- Share with God that on behalf of your friend, you’re asking for guidance, seeking His will, and knocking on the door of heaven. Claim His promise to give to those who ask, reveal to those who seek, and open to those who knock. (Matthew 7:7-8)
- Ask God to grant your friend a humble spirit, and remind Him of His promise to lead the humble in what is right, and to teach the humble his way. (Psalm 25:9)
- Pray that your friend’s heart would exemplify these words from the Psalms: “Make me know Your ways, O LORD; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; For You I wait all the day.” (Psalm 25:4-5)
- Praise God for being your friend’s rock and fortress. Profess His promise to lead them and guide them for His name’s sake. (Psalm 31:3)
- Ask God to teach your friend His way, and to help them commit to walking in His truth. Beg Him to give your friend an undivided heart to fear His name. (Psalm 86:11)
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for promising to guide those who trust in You. Please help my friend to know you more deeply, so they can trust You more fully and follow You more faithfully. It’s in the Name of my Savior, Jesus Christ, that I pray. Amen.
Tomorrow’s topic: prayers of comfort for your hurting friend. Aren’t you thankful for a Father who comforts us so tenderly? I look forward to lifting our friends to this One with you tomorrow.
