Just a heads up that today’s verses refer to some of the history of the nation of Israel. It would be a great addition to your time with the Lord today if you’ll take a little time to read Exodus 32 and Numbers 11. Those chapters will shed some light on what God is telling us through Paul in the Scriptures below.
Here’s today’s passage:
“Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, ‘The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.’ We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”
1 Corinthians 10:6-14
Dear Lord, I acknowledge to You that my heart is prone to wander. It’s prone to worship all the wrong things instead of worshipping You, the only One who is worthy of it. Help me, God, to flee from idolatry. Open my eyes to see those things that I worship with my time, my attention, my money, my energy. Whether it’s physical pleasures like sex or food or drink; or greed for money or possessions; or pride in my accomplishments or my popularity or my success. I see how the Israelites tested You by idolizing what’s false and by grumbling about what’s true, and they paid for it dearly. Thank You for the promise that none of the temptations I face are uncommon ones, and that You will not allow me to be tempted beyond my ability. Thank You for the promise that You’re always there extending a lifeline to me when I’m in the middle of being tempted. You, in fact, are that lifeline. Help me to grab onto You, and to flee from idolatry. In the name of my Savior, Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
