Those who look to Him are radiant with joy;
no shadow of shame will darken their faces.
Psalm 34:5
A dear prayer partner referenced this verse one evening during our time together.
I don’t remember the context. But the impression of this Scripture remains on my heart, perhaps because of the mental image it evoked.
“Those who look to Him…”
Is there anywhere to look for Him besides up? Yes, as a believer in His Son Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of my sins, His Spirit is within me. And yes, since He’s omnipresent – present everywhere – He’s all around me.
But as the Creator of the universe Who dwells in heaven, I don’t think it’s wrong to visualize Him above us.
He’s certainly above our circumstances. Above our fears. Above our failings.
And so “those who look to Him” might do so just like a small child who holds her daddy’s hand as they walk together.
I don’t know about you, but I want nothing more than to walk with Him. Radiant with joy in His presence, just for the sheer delight of being with Him.
I have no greater desire than to hold His hand, keeping in perfect step with where He’s going. With where He’s leading me. Radiant with joy to be partnering with Him. Cooperating in His work in the world.
When I stumble, nothing reassures me like lifting my eyes to His face. Radiant with joy because my countenance is reflecting the light of His.
“…No shadow of shame will darken their faces.”
Because really, how could it? As long as my world-weary face is meeting His radiant one head-on, no shadow can cross my features.
Shame, guilt, bondage, fear…
all of it, banished in the glorious light of His face.
Do you have shadows to dispel? A dark cloud of gloom blighting your face?
Look to Jesus, friend, and be radiant with joy.
I’ve found that one of the most effective ways to know God more intimately (which always results in overflowing joy) is to study His promises. Arabah Joy takes this concept a powerful step further by helping us pray those promises.
Praying the Promises of the Cross has dramatically deepened my understanding of God’s vast provision for me; perhaps it will do the same for you. Click here for more information on this incredible tool.
So, I know I have read that verse before, but wow! Looking to Him will prevent us from the shame of making mistakes that He is so willing to help us NOT make. So glad you talked about this verse, friend.
He’s so good to cast aside the shadow of shame that seeks to overwhelm us! Oh, for more of the light of His face.
